IKEA asked frog to help design a smart lighting system as convenient and intuitive as the traditional light bulb. Now available in IKEA stores, TRÅDFRI was brought to market by a newly established 'Home Smart' business within IKEA.
“The LED bulbs in TRÅDFRI are a very good example of how an old, familiar product such as the light bulb can suddenly do so much more, enabling more people to have better light.”
Sophisticated lighting with a simple user experience demands good design. Wireless and plug-and-play, TRÅDFRI can be installed by anyone. A remote control and mobile app place control within reach of every family member. The result is a system designed for what smart lighting should be, rather than the status quo.
Through user research and strategy insights, frog provided a broad product vision. With the opportunity clearly framed, frog designed physical and digital components that were consistent with IKEA’s democratic design principles. frog’s parent company, Aricent, architected and developed software to realize the TRÅDFRI lighting experience.
Over three years of collaboration, the TRÅDFRI program allowed IKEA to incorporate design capabilities essential to the development of connected products, helping grow and evolve both their Home Smart product line and business for the future.
IKEA looked to frog to help design a better home lighting system, beyond a bulb and switch.
A basic TRÅDFRI kit containing a remote control and LED bulb was launched in Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, and Sweden.
