Orchid is a suite of open source tools and cryptographic protocols developed and run by people who want the internet to extend our natural human freedom, not curtail it. frog helped develop a brand strategy and identity to bring this highly technical and complex concept to life, allowing Orchid to become accessible and digestible to a global market of developers. frog helped bring Orchid’s platform to life by visualizing the brand and language. Through collaboration, we created an extensible design language system with an ecosystem of visual assets, which allows users to participate in Orchid’s open marketplace for bandwidth as freely and naturally as we coexist among nature.

Expressing the Natural Internet

The ecosystem of visual assets the team created included discrete illustrations that can be built in a myriad of ways to create dynamic new patterns and designs. By using micro brand assets that are highly malleable but stick within the rules, Orchid is able to continue expressing their brand throughout every interaction and touchpoint.

The Orchid brand mark is a circular formation that takes inspiration from the emergent self-organizing behavior found in nature. People join the Orchid platform to freely contribute and connect, creating a harmonious system of mutual exchange. The brand mark illustrates this harmonious system with individual 'nodes' joining the platform, helping others to access the open internet.

Helping Physicians Adopt Emergency Telehealth Services

Telehealth services are crucial during the COVID-19 crisis. Doctors new to this way of working need immediate support. 


On a global scale, there is an urgent need to connect physicians and patients who are unable to meet in traditional settings as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking forward into an uncertain future, telehealth services will likely continue to play a critical role in delivering essential care. However, for many doctors, telehealth is a new and potentially intimidating way of working.
Launched in just nine days, the <a href="https://telehealthtoolbox.org/">Telehealth Toolbox</a> is a collection of guidelines and practical tools that aims to accelerate the adoption of telehealth practices by primary care physicians. The goal is to ease stress on the healthcare system by empowering more healthcare professionals to deliver telehealth. This should reduce unnecessary hospital visits and improve patient well-being overall.
The Telehealth Toolbox is a pro-bono project conceived of and launched by frogs passionate about contributing to the COVID-19 relief effort. To make the guidance broadly accessible—and as a reflection of the diversity found on this multinational frog team—the Telehealth Toolbox is already available in five languages, including English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Knowing What Doctors Need Most 
During research for this project, frog found documentation and tools related to operating a telehealth service, but a lack of quickly digestible guidance and actionable tools that allow doctors to set up a fully remote practice fast. To develop the Telehealth Toolbox, frog conducted remote interviews with seven doctors who provided necessary background on the challenge, tested iterations of the concept and shared the Telehealth Toolbox across their networks.
Throughout this accelerated qualitative research phase, the frog team found there are three core steps on a physician’s journey toward launching telehealth services, each with mission-critical questions for doctors to answer for themselves and their patients along the way:

<li>Preparing a practice: What communication channels are right for me and my patients? What environment, technology and tools do I need to practice? How do my methods and processes translate into a remote environment?</li>
<li>Preparing patients: What do my patients need to know to get started? What expectations around services should I set? How can I help patients manage remote health visits from a technical standpoint?</li>
<li>Delivering remote care: How do I assure my patient that telehealth services are confidential and secure? How do I perform clinical assessments remotely? How do I guide patients on what comes next?</li>

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on how we all live, work and communicate. Today, many are feeling anxious, scared and unsettled about their near and long-term futures. At frog, we believe that form follows emotion, which is why many on the global team have been looking for ways to channel unsettled feelings about the crisis into a call to action to use design for greater good. The Telehealth Toolbox is one example of a multi-disciplinary, grassroots effort by frog designers, strategists, program managers and technologists that offers immediate benefit to doctors and patients during the pandemic, and will have lasting value for the healthcare system going forward. The Telehealth Toolbox has gone on to win Gold in the New York Design Awards, and also earned an Honorable Mention in the FastCo Innovation by Design Awards Health category and the SFDW Awards.

One of the most pressing shortages hospitals face during the COVID-19 emergency is a lack of ventilators.


On March 27, 2020, frog joined the Emergency Ventilator Response team in its mission to design, produce and distribute a low-cost, easy-to-manufacture automated resuscitator to help meet the growing demands on our healthcare systems amid the coronavirus pandemic. Frog worked closely with Newlab, the home to over 800 world-class inventors, engineers, and entrepreneurs applying technology to things that matter. Newlab members and staff, along with member company and product design firm 10xBeta, initiated the response and facilitated the rapid collaboration and transformative innovation required to respond to the crisis.
The goal of the initiative was to gather a crisis response team of leading designers, engineers, volunteer researchers, public health experts, critical care physicians, and members of the business community from across the country to create a medical device that could be manufactured quickly, at scale, and at a fraction of the cost of traditional ventilators, along with a brand and communications strategy that would help communicate the need to the world.
Within 48 minutes of the request, frog assembled a ten-person team to create a website that could take hospital distribution requests, donations and submissions for manufacturing partners. Within 48 hours, the frog team had led remote collaboration workshops to define and name the initiative and the Spiro Wave device. frog helped to organize the emergency response team around a dynamic pre-launch plan including the name, website and communications around Spiro Wave, which helped the team secure partnerships and begin Emergency Use Authorization discussions with the FDA.

Traditional ventilators have more than 650 components, over one million lines of code, and are sold to hospitals at $30,000 per unit. With the cost and timing constraints involved, it will take months for larger-scale manufacturers to ramp up production of full-feature ventilators to address the shortage. 


Challenges for traditional ventilators

The Emergency Ventilator Response team  brought partners together to create the Spiro Wave, inspired by MIT’s E-vent, an emergency ventilation device that helps hospitals expand their capacity to care for patients during this crisis. It is designed for rapid manufacturing, leverages low-cost, readily available components and is ready for distribution through partners and municipalities. 


A low-cost, rapid-response solution

The frog team, in collaboration with the Emergency Ventilator Response team, helped to organize the fast-paced emergency response team’s final push to get these life-saving devices into NYC hospitals, despite the hurdles of working with remote teams across a number of organizations. 


Clear communication helps align priorities 

We implemented the following tools to facilitate remote collaboration among the Emergency Response Team:
— Microsoft Teams &amp; Zoom for face-to-face meetings when we couldn’t be in the same room 
— Slack to keep on top of group conversations and communications 
— Google Drive and SharePoint to keep on top of collaborative documents 
— Miro for remote whiteboarding and collaborative brainstorming 
— Figma for collaborative design and delivery of the final marketing and communications website 
— Contentful CMS to allow team members to quickly update text with each legal review

The amount of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 that will need ventilation while regions across the globe are facing ventilator shortages.

The Emergency Ventilator Response Team is on track to produce 500 units per day at their lead manufacturing facility in Long Island City, New York. As donations and manufacturing partners increase, so does the daily output of Spiro Wave. The Emergency Ventilator Response team anticipates production to scale to other global cities in the near future.

In addition, frog helped to design and launch a fully-functional communications website through which interested parties can either request devices for their hospital, request to become a manufacturing partner or donate funds to ensure hospitals are provided with the devices they need regardless of ability to pay.

Sit Less, Play More 
The need for Obie is clear: children are increasingly living a sedentary lifestyle, which comes with a slew of health risks.  <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/detail/24-04-2019-to-grow-up-healthy-children-need-to-sit-less-and-play-more">A 2019 article by the World Health Organization (WHO)</a> states that children need to spend less time sitting and more time playing. Indeed, research has shown that integrating play into educational activities has a significant impact on children’s cognitive and physical development. EyeClick engaged frog to design and launch <a href="https://playobie.com/?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=frog_intro">Obie</a>, a gaming system that directly addresses this need.
Meet Obie 
Obie is a truly convergent product that transforms the interactive play experience for children. Launched in December 2019, Obie is the result of a one-year, multiphase collaboration that began with initial research and go-to-market strategy, then went on to span all phases of design, from initial concepts to final packaging, and even included the design of a new, pop-up Obie store.“frog is a one-stop shop that provided us with all the services we needed for the project, enabling us to push the limit and take the product to a place that we couldn’t imagine ourselves when we started it,” said Ariel Almos, EyeClick’s CEO and founder.
Eliminating Boundaries 
Using sophisticated projection technology and 3D sensors, Obie eliminates the boundaries between physical and digital play by turning any surface into an interactive playground. Together, EyeClick and frog developed Obie as a 4-in-1 product, able to offer floor, table, wall and avatar interactive gaming experience with a simple rotation of the optical head. Collaborating with EyeClick’s R&amp;D team, frog designed solutions for the system’s technical challenges, including definition of the component layout and concepts to ensure the product dissipates heat properly.
Understanding the Customer 
The frog and EyeClick team began with initial market research, identifying the specific needs of their target customers. Through a series of on-site sessions that informed the launch of the new Obie brand as well as defined the technical requirements for the product, the frog team was able to move forward into the design phases. The result is a physical, projection-based gaming product that is more versatile, lightweight, portable and affordable than any previous system in its category. frog also designed multiple touchpoints in Obie’s surrounding digital ecosystem, including an app and an e-commerce website.
The Future of Play 
EyeClick’s interactive products are already installed in thousands of venues like educational facilities, family entertainment centers, healthcare facilities, hotels, museums, retail stores and restaurants. Obie harnesses the power of active play, bringing it to a much wider audience—bridging the gap between digital and physical gaming, and giving more kids more reason to get up and get moving.

“What is the role of insurance in an individual’s everyday life? frog worked with AXA Italy to introduce mobile services that are relevant, valuable, and easy to access, through conversational interfaces, streamlined workflows and innovative features. Together we brought to life a new way to approach insurance.”

Reinventing the customer experience in insurance is a key step in the transition from insurance provider to partner. To address the challenge, AXA Italy approached frog. Together we articulated the foundational customer experience concept and technology platforms to design, develop and launch My AXA, which offers new innovative and efficient services.

My AXA guides a user through otherwise time-consuming or stressful tasks, such as reporting an accident or locating roadside assistance in real-time. In doing so, it simplifies administration to allow AXA customers to focus on what is most important.

Interaction over Administration

My AXA uses a conversational user interface (UI) to simplify access to insurance information and functionalities, replacing jargon with clear language. The result is a more human, yet digital experience that improves transparency and helps win customer trust.

frog exercised our technology expertise to implement an end-to-end future proof solution: iOS and Android native apps built with modern languages and frameworks (Swift 4, Kotlin, GraphQL) for optimal UX, and a cloud-native, API-first backend with a microservices architecture, deployed to AWS and Openshift with a complete DevOps toolchain.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), one of the most influential cultural institutions in the US, is a recognized leader in using technology to engage art lovers and bring art to new audiences. For its Spring 2018 special exhibition, “Rene Magritte: The Fifth Season,” SFMOMA asked frog to help them create an “Interpretive Gallery” in which museum visitors could further experience “the paradoxes at work in reality” that Magritte explored in his late-career work.

“Our goal is to help visitors connect to the themes of the exhibition in playful, visceral way, while also encouraging them to see their everyday surroundings in a new light.” Says Neal Benezra, the Helen and Charles Schwab Director of SFMOMA. “On a deeper level, the Interpretive Gallery also serves as a reminder that artists have always been interested in breaking down the boundaries between natural and artificial realities—anticipating much of the work in VR and AR being done today.”
Inspired by the visual puns and paradoxes found in Magritte’s works from this period, the Magritte Interpretive Gallery presents a series of altered and augmented “windows.” Each window invites visitors to be “seen,” while simultaneously obstructing and alerting their perception of reality.
Some windows function as digital mirrors in which the visitors’ reflections do not behave as expected. Other windows sense visitors’ presence and open a gateway into another, augmented reality. The windows become both portals and problems, challenging expectations of what could and should be seen.
With the use of advanced, depth-sensing cameras and motion-tracking technology, the digital scenes in the windows draw on Magritte’s visual strategies. They also add a temporal twist, engaging the visitor in a brief journey by suspending and altering reality and perception. The combination of visual design and human-computer interaction creates a seamless experience activated by the presence of the visitor.
“We wanted to make the technology disappear as much as possible,” said Charles Yust, Principal Design Technologist and frog’s Project Lead. “There’s a mountain of coding, hardware integration, and software integration but all of that is in the service of creating a sense of ‘magic’. That’s what Magritte was achieving with just oil and canvas and we wanted to honor that while taking a modern day approach.” 
In the making of the Interpretive Gallery, frog worked with SFMOMA’s Curatorial, Digital, Marketing, Exhibitions, and Visitor Experience staff as well as content strategists, fabricators, and designers. Together, the team found a modern interpretation of “the real with the mystery that is in the real” that we think Magritte himself would have enjoyed.
