The position: Design Research Intern

At frog, Design Research is the practice that inspires and informs design decisions across the different project phases, all the way from framing an innovation challenge to defining a value proposition and testing a concept. Design Researchers are curious designers who, from the very beginning of a program, ask “who are we designing for and why?”.

Design Research is grounded in the idea that, by spending time in field with people, observing and collecting their input, we can more successfully create products and services that make sense to users, while also bringing value to the business. A design researcher masters a variety of qualitative research methods and employs them to interpret the reality and collect meaningful insights.

 

The Contribution:

  • Contribute to the different steps from planning throughout completion of the research activities
  • Lead interviews and in-field activities
  • Contribute to the preparation and facilitation of collaborative workshops with the relevant stakeholders
  • Able to map articulated ecosystems and support decision-making in service design projects
  • Contribute to story-telling and presentation building
  • Empathy, active listening and an open-minded approach are the key to ensuring that even the most delicate research topics can be addressed successfully
  • Proactively seek opportunities on both client work and various studio initiatives

 

During the internship, the candidate will have the chance to exercise and refine his/her skills.

At the same time, he/she will be asked to actively join a team, which, at a minimum, requires him/her to already possess the following abilities.

 

You are: 

  • Master Degree students or graduated student, ideally coming from a design or applied ethnography background
  • Familiar with both primary/in field research and secondary research
  • Familiar with qualitative research methods (interviewing, observation/shadowing, workshop facilitation, ...) and with different types of user research (foundational/exploratory, generative, evaluative)
  • Able to choose the right research methods/participants and contribute to research planning activities
  • Able to gather data in a structured way and extract useful learnings
  • Passionate about thinking visual, possessing visual and representation skills which enable him/her to contribute to the overall sense-making of the project across the different phases and to produce compelling and effective artefacts for the specific activities (eg: research stimuli, research synthesis)
  • Software skills: Familiar/Proficient with Sketch, Adobe CS, Keynote.
  • Fluent in English and able to work in Italy without restrictions/sponsorship
  • Available for 6 months
  • Also, a collaborative and empathic approach, alongside a proactive attitude toward learning are well appreciated characteristics
  • Optional skills: quantitative research

  • a description of the research challenge
  • a description of the tools and methods you have used
  • your top 3 insights (things you’ve learned through the research) and an explanation of how they have influenced your design

 

Please note:

frog is an international work environment, with global clients. As such, fluency in English is an absolute must.
