Worries about climate change, over-population, poverty, disease, depleted resources, and energy issues are attracting exponential attention. While these issues do pose significant challenges, they also offer unique opportunities. Now is the time for innovative businesses to engage with the outside world and say, “The future isn’t bleak, it’s full of possibility.”
We decided to put our expertise in the mobile space to use with Project Masiluleke, an effort to address one of the world’s most pressing medical issues: the HIV epidemic in Africa. By using text messaging to reach out to millions of people in South Africa, frog, Pop!Tech, and other partners are directly increasing HIV awareness and giving access to support and treatment in an effective way that honors privacy. In the big picture: We’re transforming healthcare in the planet’s emerging markets.
We also created a $1 million internal initiative called frogware, to develop green product concepts, including the LED light bulb that won gold in IDSA’s 2008 International Design Excellence Awards. And we helped launch the Designers Accord, a treaty shaped by a global coalition of designers, educators, researchers, engineers, and thought leaders.
For our clients, we’re offering three tools to innovate more responsibly: Sustainable Strategy, Systems Innovation, and Responsible Design.
We tell our clients that you need to think green before you act green. And that comes from leadership. frog has developed a user-centered process to understand the behaviors of a company – how things get done and what makes them tick – so that we can advise leadership on how to establish a Sustainable Strategy.
Once a Sustainable Strategy is structured, a plan of action can be put into place– a process we call Systems Innovation. Part of understanding the social dynamics at work in the new global economy, is acknowledging that the world is no longer a fragmented, compartmentalized entity, but a place where individuals and businesses are part of a larger system. What we do affects everything else, and that’s both a considerable responsibility and a vast opportunity. Systems Innovation is the planning stage in which frog leverages this inside/outside perspective to discover new portfolio opportunities and entirely new ways of doing business.
Responsible Design is the delivery stage in which we help companies construct products and services that are socially and ecologically meaningful.
Whether the goal is to create lighter products with modular designs, more meaningful experiences, or entirely new business models, frog has the people and the passion to help businesses make the world a better place tomorrow than it is today.
