frog design Launches New Work-Life Edition of design mind Magazine at Special TED Salon in London
SAN FRANCISCO / LONDON, April 20, 2010 - Global innovation firm frog design today released the latest edition of its award-winning design mind magazine at a special TED Salon in London, hosted in partnership with the renowned technology, entertainment, and design conference. The fifth print issue of design mind (and its twelfth overall) investigates the theme of Work-Life, and how a new always-on mobile dynamic and an ever converging culture are influencing life at home and at the office.
In more than 25 articles, the editors, writers, and artists of design mind take a look at the new Work-Life landscape from a variety of angles.
“What we do for a living and how we do it has become such an important part of our lives that we wanted to ask some fundamental questions,” says design mind editor-in-chief Sam Martin. “Is Work-Life balance possible anymore? Is it even that important? Work bleeds into life far more than it used to, so it's critical that we allow life to become part of work as well. That's the hard part.”
Contributors to this issue include special guests Alison Arieff, the New York Times columnist and former editor of dwell magazine; and Brian Hardwick, former communications director for Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection. This issue's “In Person” interview is with novelist and author Jonathan Safran Foer. The second installment of the special “Meaning of Business” section includes essays by Matthew May, author of the bestselling book In Pursuit of Elegance, and Roberto Verganti, author of the book Design-Driven Innovation, as well as an article by Pat Christen, the CEO of the social enterprise Hope Lab.
Highlights include
- The Wonderful Work-Life World of Steven M. Johnson: New York Times columnist Alison Arieff profiles the illustrator and his unusual depictions of the office space of the future.
- Food Fight: Sam Martin talks to renowned novelist Jonathan Safran Foer about his latest book, Eating Animals, and why the U.S. needs to rethink its food system.
- The Perfect Work-Life Imbalance: Jon Freach compares his job and family life to that of his father and his childhood, and wonders if not having a work-life balance is such a bad thing.
- Zen and the Art of Design: David Sherwin travels to Japan to understand the work of a designer and where ideas come from.
- Finding a New Way to Live: Al Gore's former communication's director Brian Hardwick writes about why people are the key to enacting the promise of new energy and clean-tech initiatives.
- Bootstrapping a Career in China: Emma Zhu documents a day in the life of a young China entrepreneur trying to start a new business in the People's Republic.
- Here's to Your Health: Barbara Pantuso examines the health effects of stress in the workplace.
- The Roads Less Traveled: Kristina Loring profiles three recent college graduates as they search for meaningful careers in a tough economy.
