The financial crisis has everyone consumed. The picture is not a pretty one, and clearly it will take us some time to climb out of the mess. However, there is an overwhelming consensus that we will climb out. The question is: How long will it take? People are frightened and consumed by fear. Fear causes people to make poor decisions.

If you want to experience Woody Allen's claim that "80 per cent of success is just showing up," I recommend you speak at a conference in China. I just had the honor of being invited to the Shenzhen Original Design Fair, which, in its fourth year, brought together "elite designers," as the local daily called them, with the Shenzhen design and manufacturing community.

This week I attended Fortune’s Most Powerful Women’s Summit, which brings together a group of 300+ C-level executive women. I’ve attended for the past three years, and each year it gets better.

In a great essay for Core 77 ("Stepmothers of Invention: Branding Firms Enter the Industrial Design Fray"), Carl Alviani describes a trend that's been emerging for a while now: Not only do digital agencies like R/GA enter the branding domain, branding, marcom, and advertising firms also round out their services portfolio by adding product design capabilities.

A few words caught my eye when scanning the news last week: "campus culture wars of the 1980s and ’90s." I was on a campus in this timeframe and I was not aware there was a war. What war was this? A cultural one? How intriguing.
