This blog is a response to the barrage of technology and design blogs that breathlessly post on the latest and greatest. We at Ideator also love the latest and greatest, but we’re more interested on how these developments are impacting the way people live. What’s revolutionary and what’s just a new skin on a bad product? Where does the hype end, and where to the new ideas begin?
Welcome to the first post on Ideator. This blog is a response to the barrage of technology and design blogs that breathlessly post on the latest and greatest. We at Ideator also love the latest and greatest, but we're more interested on how these developments are impacting the way people live. Is the PS3 really all that innovative? Is anyone using all the features in their new car? What’s revolutionary and what’s just a new skin on a bad product? Where does the hype end, and where to the new ideas begin? These are the questions we will endeavor to answer.
So welcome – and please feel free to post in the comments. Looking forward to some interesting conversations in the months to come.

Adam - Thank you for starting this very timely discussion. I look forward to watching and participating.
The best part is now my friends and family won't think I am the only one who questions, well...everything! :)
Also, if I may, one "feature" I would love to explore is the Lexus Self Parking System. When did parking get that hard?

Hi Adam - gizmos and gadgets certainly take the spotlight at most design sites *guilty face* - I'm glad you're starting this conversation to really discuss more in depth about products beyond when it's launch, memory capacity and how many candy colors it'd appear in.
Valerie - it does seem like parking system are really getting the attention of many car makers. Apart from the Lexus Self Parking system, Nissan also seems to be working on a 4-camera system too! http://gemssty.com/2007/10/13/nissan-all-round-camera-monitor/

You guys/gals are talkin' my language! Great minds think alike, right? (yeah, right) I work as a copywriter, but I come from the opposite end of the spectrum than most of my peers in regards to hype. As both a marketer and a consumer, I'm sick of the "LOOK AT ME" mentality in advertising, design and promotion. Consumers don't care how great the product is. All that should matter is how well it meets THEIR needs. That's why they buy! I advise clients to please, please do less chest-thumping and more interaction with customers. They're the ones who should be on stage, with your product in a supporting role. How -- and in what ways -- will this new great technology like self-parking make my life easier, better and happier?? Thanks for blogging on a great subject. Stop over and discuss some time on my "Power to the people" blog ....
Valerie, KK, Jeffrey, thanks

Valerie, KK, Jeffrey, thanks for your encouragement and your comments. I'm excited to see how the blog evolves. I'm a self-professed technophile but also a natural skeptic of hype, and I worry that all the talk of user-centric design has gotten lost lately in a sea of me-too products. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions to the rule, and I'll be covering those as well. Please continue to comment; I'm hoping these posts will act more as conversation starters than anything else. Thanks again for reading.
