KaVo Dental System Case Study

Challenge

KaVo looked to frog not only to design a dental chair with hydraulic capabilities to meet American demand, but also one consistent with the current KaVo brand. Further, the KaVo chair would need to complement cultural standards and upholstery configurations, all in a differentiated design platform. Following these directives would be critical in frog's development of a fully integrated design and engineering language for the new KaVo dental chair.

Process

Dentistry Meets Design

KaVo has been the industry leader in state-of-the-art dental equipment and hand pieces since its inception in 1903. Heavy market saturation in Europe and Latin America has contributed to KaVo's worldwide reputation for product quality and excellence but has limited the scope in which it is perceived. With a substantial foothold in the North American dental piece industry, KaVo sensed opportunity to leverage its brand presence and introduce a new dental chair.

KaVo is one of frog's longest-standing partnerships to date. Spanning 32 years, frog's symbiotic relationship with KaVo has paved the way for ground breaking innovations in dental equipment design and engineering. Building on this experience, frog proved to be the ideal partner for this task.

To ensure the most effective design solution, frog conducted extensive research of environmental, engineering and aesthetic dimensions. From these studies, dental hardware design and technology parameters were explored and defined, establishing the foundation for preliminary concepts and sketches.

The Fusion of Parts

Extensive research led to preliminary concepts and sketches expressing unprecedented design architecture sensitive to elements of function, ergonomics, hygiene and comfort.

Comfort and Mobility

The new KaVo dental chair challenges traditional conventions common to dental chair design by combining physical sensibility with a rugged excellence and style. Deluxe or standard upholstery, dual head handles and a thinly designed backrest provide the ultimate in patient comfort. Dual touch pads and head handles, rotating armrests and a seat pivoting system easily accommodate dentist mobility.

Result

The overall design of the new KaVo chair is fluid, expressive and effectively reinforces the KaVo brand. The Environment system was launched February 2001 in Chicago where the new aesthetic and features were received with great enthusiasm.
